Title: Acoustic metamaterials for biomedical implants

Abstract:
Metamaterials (from Greek: μετά, “beyond” conventional matter) are an interesting class of materials with engineered and customized properties, such as wave guiding or invisibility in the optical and acoustic domains. In this presentation, the application of this concept for the development of a new class of ultrasound-responsive sensors, based on acoustic metamaterials, with envisioned applications in biomedical implants, will be discussed. It will start with the presentation of the rationale behind the design, through band structure calculation and FEM simulation. Afterwards, it will move to the first part of the presentation, focused on temperature sensing and characterization in water, in the presence of tissue-mimicking materials and real animal tissue, respectively. Figures of merit such as temperature sensitivity, resolution, and accuracy will be commented on. Then, the second part of the presentation will focus on pressure sensing, and the conclusions will provide some perspectives about the real integration of the sensor in actual prostheses (e.g., orthopedic or cardiovascular implants). This concept opens the way to new low-power sensing solutions with great potential in the biomedical field, using ultrasound as external interrogation.
